About Ethereum
Ethereum is a decentralized programmable blockchain platform and the world's leading smart contract network. Created by Vitalik Buterin and launched in 2015, Ethereum enables developers to build decentralized applications (dApps), DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, and layer-2 scaling networks. Following The Merge in 2022, Ethereum transitioned from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, dramatically reducing energy consumption and introducing ETH staking. The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a base fee burn mechanism, making ETH deflationary under high network usage. Ethereum's ecosystem hosts thousands of protocols with over $85 billion in total value locked.
