ARK's Q3 Attribution Shows Concentrated AI and Biotech Bets

ARK's third-quarter winners included 10x Genomics, Twist, Tempus and Palantir, while Tesla and Rocket Lab detracted. The figures reveal concentration and theme exposure, not a forecast of future returns.
ARK Invest's third-quarter attribution shows how a small number of volatile holdings can drive its thematic exchange-traded funds. The figures measure each stock's contribution to fund return, not the stock's standalone performance, so they reveal portfolio exposure as much as security selection.
In ARK Genomic Revolution ETF, 10x Genomics contributed 9.03 percentage points to a 28.92% quarterly gain. The same holding added 2.92 points to ARK Innovation ETF's 10.39% return. Twist Bioscience and Tempus AI were also significant positive contributors as investors connected their data and laboratory platforms with AI-enabled drug discovery.
Palantir contributed across five ARK funds, including 1.62 points to ARKK and 2.39 points to ARK Fintech Innovation ETF. Nvidia added smaller positive contributions to the autonomous technology and space funds. The breadth across funds shows how one AI theme can create correlated exposure even when the ETFs have different labels.
Tesla was the most consistent detractor, subtracting 1.75 points from ARKK and similar amounts from two other funds. Rocket Lab reduced returns in the autonomous technology and space portfolios. These losses illustrate the other side of concentrated thematic investing: several funds can decline together when a shared high-conviction holding weakens.
Investors should use the attribution to understand risk, not chase the prior quarter's winners. The next test is whether operating results support the narratives that drove biotech and AI revaluations. ARK's official quarterly update also reminds investors that fund performance can fluctuate sharply and past returns do not guarantee future results.
