Model Portfolios Are Adding Taxes, Alternatives and Tokenization

A wave of product launches shows model portfolios expanding beyond simple stock and bond allocations. Tax overlays, stacked alternatives, tokenized index exposure and multi-asset ETFs promise convenience while adding new layers of complexity.

Asset managers and financial technology firms are pushing model portfolios well beyond traditional stock and bond mixes. Recent launches combine tax management, alternative strategies, tokenized funds and packaged multi-asset exposure. The common promise is easier implementation, but each product adds assumptions that investors and advisers need to understand.

Vestmark and Allspring Global Investments formed a partnership to build tax-aware model portfolios. Allspring's actively managed strategies will be available through Vestmark's unified managed account infrastructure, alongside other funds. Vestmark will handle trading, rebalancing, tax-aware transitions and ongoing tax management through its advisory platform and tax-overlay tools.

The attraction is operational. An adviser can retain an investment framework while outsourcing the difficult work of coordinating trades and tax lots across client accounts. The limitation is that tax outcomes depend on each investor's holdings, realized gains, withdrawal needs and applicable tax rules. A model can improve implementation without guaranteeing after-tax outperformance.

WisdomTree and Return Stacked ETFs are taking a different route. Their co-branded models, expected on the Quorus platform during the current quarter, will combine traditional exposures with strategies such as managed futures, merger arbitrage, gold and long-short equity. WisdomTree's investment committee will manage the models with input from the Return Stacked team.

These capital-efficient structures use derivatives or layered exposures so one dollar can support more than one investment objective. That can improve diversification when the added strategies behave differently from stocks and bonds. It can also increase leverage, collateral, counterparty and model risk. Investors need to examine how the layers perform in stressed markets, not only how they improve a backtest.

Tokenization is another part of the expansion. Janus Henderson and Centrifuge launched JQQQ, a blockchain-native fund designed to track the Nasdaq-100 Index under license from Nasdaq. The fund operates on the Stellar network and extends Janus Henderson's onchain platform, which the source said already held more than $1 billion across Treasury, structured-credit and public-equity strategies.

VanEck launched the Wealth Builder ETF, ticker WBMO, with a 0.33% gross expense ratio. The fund combines global stocks and bonds with real assets, gold and a measured bitcoin allocation. It uses both VanEck and third-party exchange-traded funds. The structure turns a diversified model into a single security, but investors still bear the costs and risks of the underlying holdings as well as the top-level fund.

Cantor Fitzgerald Asset Management and Lincoln Energy Partners added a different alternative. Their interval fund invests primarily in U.S. oil and gas interests and, as of October 26, had exposure to about 3,000 wells operated by more than 200 companies. Interval funds can hold less-liquid assets, but redemptions are available only at specified times and may be limited.

The larger pattern is not a single winning product. It is the packaging of tasks that once required several accounts, managers or operational systems into one model or fund. Convenience can be valuable, especially for advisers managing taxes and rebalancing at scale. It does not eliminate the need to inspect fees, liquidity, leverage, tax assumptions and the behavior of every underlying exposure.
