SoFi's Crypto Volume Is Large, but the Economics Are Still Tiny

SoFi processed $161.6 million of gross crypto transaction revenue in Q3, yet only $1.6 million became net revenue. Account growth is real, but active use and full product profitability remain undisclosed.

SoFi's new crypto business processed a large headline number in the third quarter, but almost none of it became net revenue. The company reported $161.6 million of crypto transaction revenue and a $160.0 million cost of crypto transaction revenue, leaving $1.6 million after that specific cost line.

That gap is the central fact for investors. BTI calculates that net crypto transaction revenue was about 1.0% of the gross line, while the related cost absorbed about 99.0%. The $1.6 million net contribution was only about 0.12% of SoFi's $1.385 billion in total net revenue for the quarter. Across the first nine months of 2026, the same accounting produced $3.7 million of net crypto transaction revenue from $417.5 million gross, a ratio of about 0.9%.

The accounting does not mean SoFi lost money on every crypto trade. In its SEC-filed earnings release, SoFi said net crypto transaction revenue mainly consists of transaction fees earned by facilitating member buy and sell orders. The company did not separately disclose marketing, technology, compliance or employee costs for the product. The $1.6 million figure is therefore not crypto operating profit, and the gross figure should not be compared with ordinary net revenue from a software or lending business.

Usage also needs careful interpretation. SoFi reported 503,070 crypto products at September 30, after returning to crypto investing in the fourth quarter of 2025. Its definition counts crypto accounts opened through the platform through the reporting date. It does not establish how many accounts were funded, active during the quarter or profitable. That distinction matters because a rapidly rising account count can coexist with modest revenue if many customers trade infrequently or in small amounts.

The crypto economics sit inside a much stronger companywide quarter. SoFi's total net revenue rose 44% from a year earlier to $1.385 billion, while reported net income increased 73% to $241.0 million. Management raised its 2026 outlook to $5.04 billion of adjusted net revenue and $1.66 billion of adjusted EBITDA. Crypto is not carrying that growth story.

For now, crypto appears more useful as a feature that broadens SoFi's financial app than as a material earnings engine. The next evidence investors need is not another gross transaction figure. It is sustained growth in net crypto revenue, clearer disclosure of the costs outside the transaction line and proof that opened accounts become active relationships.
