Reddit’s AI Advertising Engine Is Starting to Matter as Revenue Growth Accelerates
Reddit is using AI to automate targeting, creative selection and campaign optimization. Rapid adoption of Reddit Max is helping advertising growth, but the key question is whether AI can keep improving advertiser returns at scale.
Reddit is increasingly using artificial intelligence not just as a product feature, but as a direct monetization tool. The company’s second-quarter results showed strong advertising growth, and the early performance of Reddit Max suggests AI is beginning to improve how advertisers buy and optimize campaigns on the platform.
Reddit generated $805 million of second-quarter revenue, 61% above the prior-year period, with advertising contributing $762 million after a 64% increase. That scale matters because Reddit’s AI tools are being layered onto an advertising business that is already growing quickly rather than being introduced as a speculative future product.
Reddit Max is emerging as one of the central pieces of that strategy. The system automates targeting, creative selection, placement and budget allocation while still allowing advertisers to set broader campaign objectives. Usage of Reddit Max by advertisers climbed more than 60% from the previous quarter, and campaign revenue tied to the product expanded by more than 150%.
The early performance metrics are encouraging. Testing showed a 17% reduction in cost per acquisition and more than a 27% increase in conversions. Lenovo was cited as generating 40% higher purchase value with Max campaigns compared with standard campaigns. Those examples matter because advertisers ultimately care about measurable returns, not simply access to a new AI feature.
The platform’s advertiser base is also expanding. Active advertisers increased more than 70%, suggesting that demand is broadening alongside the product improvements. Reddit’s high-intent communities can be attractive for brands because users often arrive with specific interests, questions or purchase considerations.
The next challenge is scalability. AI optimization works best when a platform has enough data to train recommendation and targeting systems, and Reddit has a large corpus of human conversation. But the company must use that data without weakening user trust or making the platform feel overly commercial.
Management expects third-quarter revenue of $860 million to $870 million, which would keep the top line growing at a high rate. Investors should watch whether Max continues to gain share of advertiser spending and whether conversion improvements remain strong as adoption broadens beyond early users.
Competition is intense. Meta, Google, Snap and other platforms are also using AI to automate campaign creation and targeting. Reddit’s differentiation comes from community context and intent rather than sheer scale.
If Reddit can consistently produce better advertiser economics from that context, AI can become a meaningful driver of revenue growth and margin expansion. The key is not whether Reddit uses AI; nearly every major advertising platform does. The question is whether its AI can turn distinctive community data into measurable performance that advertisers cannot easily replicate elsewhere.
Reddit’s AI advertising strategy can also improve margins if automation reduces the amount of manual campaign management required from both the advertiser and the platform. Better optimization can increase campaign performance while allowing the company to serve more advertisers without growing support costs at the same pace. That potential operating leverage is one reason Max adoption matters beyond the top line.
The next question is whether Reddit Max becomes a default workflow rather than an optional feature. If advertisers increasingly trust the system to allocate budgets and choose creatives, Reddit can capture a larger share of campaign spending and make the platform more difficult to replace. The best proof will be sustained improvements in return on ad spend as adoption broadens beyond early users. That would show AI is improving the economics of the ad business rather than simply adding another product label.
