Netflix Names Peter Rice Content Chief Before a Key Earnings Test
Peter Rice will replace Bela Bajaria as Netflix content chief on October 26. The leadership change arrives alongside layoffs and ahead of earnings that will test engagement, advertising and margin expectations.
Netflix appointed former Disney executive Peter Rice as chief content officer, effective October 26, replacing Bela Bajaria after nearly a decade at the company. The change puts a new leader over Netflix's global content operation at a moment when investors are debating engagement and spending discipline.
Bajaria oversaw major global hits and Netflix's expansion into live programming. Rice brings experience from Disney and Fox, but the appointment alone does not establish a new content strategy. The financial effect will depend on programming decisions, hit rates and how quickly spending shifts.
The transition follows reported layoffs affecting about 1,000 employees, or roughly 6% of staff, according to the source report. Netflix said internally that it remained on track for 2026 revenue of $51.0 billion to $51.4 billion, an operating margin of 31.5% and about $12.5 billion of free cash flow.
Those targets frame the near-term test. Wedbush expected third-quarter revenue close to company guidance and argued that advertising growth matters more than the leadership headline. It also said engagement remained central to the bear case, while subscriber surveys suggested limited churn after price increases.
Investors should avoid assigning immediate value to an executive change before seeing the operating evidence. The next earnings report should show whether engagement, average revenue per member and advertising are supporting Netflix's margin and cash-flow goals. Rice's arrival may influence the content portfolio over time, but the first verdict belongs to the numbers already in motion.
