Moderna Rallies 8%, BioNTech Climbs 4% as the mRNA Trade Whipsaws for a Third Session

Moderna, BioNTech and Merck are moving on one Phase 3 melanoma result rather than fresh clinical information, while options positioning, retail enthusiasm and a possible October ESMO presentation keep the mRNA trade volatile.
The mRNA trade is in its third straight session of sharp reversals, despite limited broader-market movement. The S&P 500 is up 0.3% and the NASDAQ 100 0.1%, indicating that volatility is concentrated in biotechnology. Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) is up 8% to $143.79 Friday morning. BioNTech (NASDAQ:BNTX) has risen 4% to $114.97, while Merck (NYSE:MRK) is at $149.36. Moderna surged 177% Wednesday after a Phase 3 melanoma win, surrendered 18% Thursday and was indicated sharply lower Friday before reversing higher. The underlying news has not changed. Moderna and Merck said intismeran, their individualized mRNA cancer vaccine, met its primary endpoint in a Phase 3 melanoma trial. Combined with Merck’s Keytruda, it improved recurrence-free and metastasis-free survival in patients whose tumors had been surgically removed. It is the first successful late-stage trial of its kind. The complete dataset has not been publicly presented and could emerge at the ESMO conference in Madrid from October 23 to 27. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk also supported sentiment on X, writing that, despite its misuse during Covid, mRNA has tremendous promise for curing diseases and that “Artificial RNA essentially makes curing diseases a software problem.” He was responding to Eric Topol of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, who cited personalized mRNA work in pancreatic, triple-negative breast and non-small cell lung cancers. Retail trading has amplified the moves. A WallStreetBets post titled “$500k overnight $MRNA” received 4,914 upvotes and 476 comments; Reddit sentiment is very bullish across 52 qualified mentions. Moderna owns the readout, helping explain its 352% year-to-date gain and double-digit daily swings. BioNTech, up 16% year to date, is developing autogene cevumeran with Genentech in adjuvant colorectal and pancreatic settings. Merck co-owns the trial, but Keytruda’s broad oncology franchise limits the incremental impact of one melanoma indication; Merck is up 44%. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (NASDAQ:IBB) is $212.28, up 25% year to date. Moderna’s full-chain put/call ratio is 0.86, ranging from 0.79 near-dated to 8.54 in early October; BioNTech’s is 0.28. Investors should watch Friday’s close and whether ESMO pulls positioning forward. Moderna can still move double digits without new information, underscoring the risk of speculative sizing.
