GAC Launches E8 in Macao as EV Growth Outruns Group Sales
GAC introduced the plug-in hybrid E8 in Macao with long combined range and premium pricing, while official data show fast new-energy growth alongside declining total group sales.
GAC Group has launched its new E8 plug-in hybrid multipurpose vehicle in Macao, pairing a 281-kilometer electric range with a claimed 1,537-kilometer combined range. The product supports GAC's push into new-energy vehicles and overseas markets, but it arrives while the wider group is still contending with weaker overall sales.
The E8 is aimed at families in Macao and the Greater Bay Area. GAC lists charge-sustaining fuel consumption as low as 3.98 liters per 100 kilometers, about 56 square feet of cabin space, 18 seating configurations and a panoramic camera system. The MAX version is priced at HKD339,800 and the ULTRA at HKD369,800, with a HKD6,000 early-bird discount.
Those specifications come from the company's launch announcement and use China's CLTC testing standard for range. Real-world electric and combined range can vary with speed, weather, charging behavior and load, so the figures are best treated as standardized claims rather than guaranteed driving results.
Macao is a small vehicle market, but GAC is using it as a bridge to the Greater Bay Area and Portuguese-speaking markets. The company said its Macao sales rose 113% year over year and its Asia-Pacific retail sales increased 109% in the first nine months of 2026. These regional percentages were not accompanied by unit counts in the announcement, which limits their value for judging scale.
The broader operating picture is more mixed. GAC's September production and sales report showed group vehicle sales of 128,634, down 25.72% from a year earlier. Sales for the first nine months were 1.14 million, down 3.58%. At the same time, new-energy vehicle sales increased 50.90% in September and 61.13% over the first nine months, reaching 432,390 units year to date.
That divergence is the main investor signal. Growth in electric and plug-in vehicles is becoming large enough to reshape GAC's mix, but it has not yet offset weakness across the full portfolio. The E8 adds another product to the new-energy lineup, while the company's Aion operation and other electrified models carry much of the volume transition.
For shareholders of GAC Group, listed in Hong Kong under code 2238 and in Shanghai under code 601238, the E8 launch is a modest product catalyst rather than a stand-alone earnings event. The more important test is whether new-energy growth can translate into sustained group volume, better utilization and improved profitability. Future monthly sales, model-level deliveries and pricing discipline will show whether the Macao launch contributes meaningfully beyond a regional marketing milestone.
