JPMorgan's 10% Bitcoin Forecast Comes With 55% Volatility

J.P. Morgan's long-term assumptions give Bitcoin a 10% annualized base-case return, above several traditional assets, but pair it with 55% volatility and wide bull-bear outcomes. The firm still excludes it from core allocation models.

J.P. Morgan Asset Management's new Bitcoin forecast is bullish on return and unusually blunt about the risk required to earn it.

The firm's 2027 long-term assumptions assign Bitcoin a 10% annualized base-case return over 10 years, according to Stocktwits. That compares with 7.5% for U.S. large-cap equities, 8.2% for real estate investment trusts and 5.5% for gold. The same analysis estimates 55% annualized Bitcoin volatility, versus 18% for U.S. large caps.

That gap explains why the arithmetic average return can be much higher than the compound return investors keep. Large losses require disproportionately large gains to recover. A 50% decline, for example, needs a 100% increase merely to return to the starting value.

The forecast is also wide enough to resist simple interpretation. JPMorgan's reported bear case is an 11.2% annual loss, while the bull case is a 16.6% annual gain. The models begin with a Bitcoin price of $83,000 on September 30, 2026 and combine money-supply, gold-complement and network-use frameworks with different weights.

J.P. Morgan says its long-term assumptions are designed for strategic planning over 10 to 15 years, not as price targets. The firm left Bitcoin outside its main portfolio covariance matrices because volatility is high and correlations with other assets remain unstable.

That decision is as important as the 10% forecast. An asset can have an attractive expected return without being a reliable diversifier or suitable core holding. Portfolio size should be tested against the bear scenario and the possibility that Bitcoin's relationship with stocks changes during stress.

The forecast supports a possible long-term role for Bitcoin, but it does not turn a speculative asset into a bond-like planning input.
