FuelCell Pullback Deepens as Investors Weigh Data Center Promise Against Near-Term Risks

FuelCell Pullback Deepens as Investors Weigh Data Center Promise Against Near-Term Risks

FuelCell Energy shares fell amid broad market weakness, dilution concerns, declining revenue and backlog, and execution risks, challenging optimism around its data center pipeline despite a substantial long-term rally and bullish analyst targets.

FuelCell Energy Inc. shares declined Tuesday as investors reduced exposure to volatile stocks during a broader market retreat. The Nasdaq fell 1.85%, the S&P 500 declined 0.66%, and Industrials dropped about 1.1%. The move appeared driven primarily by market pressure rather than a company-specific catalyst. FCEL has gained more than 390% over the past 12 months and reached a 52-week high in June, leaving it vulnerable to profit-taking when sentiment turns defensive. Eight sectors advanced while three declined, indicating relatively concentrated weakness; Industrials fell about 1.08%, with FCEL underperforming the sector. FuelCell Energy’s $225 million July public offering, priced at $21 per share, has intensified dilution concerns. Fiscal second-quarter revenue fell 5% year over year to $35.6 million, while backlog declined 9.9% to $1.14 billion. Investors are watching whether the company’s expanding data center pipeline can convert into contracted backlog and revenue. That conversion is a potential catalyst, but execution remains a key risk. FCEL remains in a longer-term uptrend, trading approximately 19% above its 100-day simple moving average and 66% above its 200-day SMA. Short-term momentum is less decisive: shares were roughly flat against the 20-day SMA and 2.4% below the 50-day SMA. RSI at 49.95 was neutral. Resistance is $25.50, while $18.50 is key support. Wall Street assigns FCEL a Buy rating with an average price forecast of $19.00. UBS upgraded the stock to Buy with a $27 target on July 14. B. Riley Securities upgraded it to Buy with a $32 target on June 29. UBS previously maintained Neutral while raising its target to $22 on June 26. ETF exposure could amplify volatility. FCEL represents 5.49% of the Invesco WilderHill Clean Energy ETF, 4.08% of the State Street SPDR S&P Kensho Clean Power ETF, and 7.24% of the Global X Hydrogen ETF. Significant fund flows could trigger automatic buying or selling. Shares were down 5.39% at $21.07 at publication, according to Benzinga Pro data.
