Marqeta and Coinbase Bring Stablecoin Balances to Everyday Cards

Marqeta will combine its card-issuing platform with Coinbase custody, conversion and Base settlement, giving businesses a way to fund card programs with stablecoins around the clock.

Marqeta and Coinbase are extending a six-year partnership from crypto-linked consumer cards into infrastructure that businesses can use to issue stablecoin-funded payment cards. The arrangement joins Coinbase's custody and conversion systems with Marqeta's issuing and processing platform, while Base, Coinbase's blockchain, is intended to handle onchain settlement.

The practical change is that a company using Marqeta could fund a card program with stablecoin balances at any hour, instead of waiting for banking windows or asking users to convert digital assets manually before spending. The cards would still work through conventional card networks at merchants that accept card payments, so the customer experience remains familiar even though the funding rail changes.

Who controls each layer matters. Coinbase will hold stablecoin balances and convert between digital assets and fiat currency. Marqeta will issue cards, process transactions and manage relationships with banks and card networks. That split lets both companies extend existing strengths rather than build the entire stack from scratch.

For Coinbase, the deal advances a broader effort to turn stablecoins into financial infrastructure for businesses. The exchange said in its first-quarter 2026 results that USDC held in Coinbase products reached a record and that stablecoin transactions on Base grew tenfold from a year earlier. Marqeta adds a route from those balances to ordinary commerce.

The investment case is promising but incomplete. Neither company disclosed pricing, committed customers, expected transaction volume or a launch schedule. The collaboration therefore expands the addressable market without yet establishing how much revenue it can produce.

Execution also depends on bank sponsorship, card-network rules and the reliability of conversions between stablecoins and fiat. Those controls sit alongside the usual questions about reserves, regulation and blockchain settlement. If enterprise customers adopt the product, Coinbase could gain custody and conversion activity while Marqeta adds issuing and processing volume. Until customer wins and economics are disclosed, the announcement is best read as a distribution expansion rather than a quantified earnings catalyst.
