Coinbase's Q3 Test Is Revenue Near $1.3 Billion, Not AI Hype

Coinbase reports after the October 29 close. The quarter must show that trading, stablecoins and cost control can support roughly $1.3 billion of revenue while newer products remain small.

Coinbase will report third-quarter results after the market closes on October 29, and the immediate test is more prosaic than the company's recent pitch around AI agents and tokenized stocks. Revenue, subscription income and expenses still determine whether the 2026 consensus can hold.

The source article said analysts expected $5.30 billion of 2026 revenue, about 26% below the $7.18 billion reported for 2025. Coinbase generated about $2.63 billion in the first half, which implies roughly $2.67 billion for the second half, or about $1.34 billion per quarter on average. That is a BTI calculation from the cited full-year estimate and first-half total, not company guidance.

Second-quarter results showed why the bar matters. Consumer transaction revenue fell 31% from a year earlier to $451.7 million as consumer spot volume declined 38%. Subscription and services revenue was $555.1 million, below management's $565 million to $645 million outlook. For the third quarter, Coinbase guided subscription and services revenue to $500 million to $580 million.

Management's own July update was also soft. Coinbase said it generated about $130 million of transaction revenue through July 26, compared with roughly $200 million a month during the second quarter. One partial month cannot predict the full quarter, but it means the later weeks had to improve for revenue to approach the level embedded in the annual estimate.

New products are strategically interesting but still small beside the core platform. Coinbase promoted tools that let users connect AI agents to research and trading workflows, expanded tokenized-stock uses on Base, and added fixed-rate bitcoin-backed loans through Morpho. The source said Aave deposits tied to tokenized stocks were $10.1 million out of $18.9 million across decentralized-finance venues. Coinbase reported about $246 billion of assets on platform at June 30. The comparison shows scale, not a like-for-like revenue measure.

The more immediate diversification evidence is subscription and services. Coinbase said the category represented 48% of second-quarter net revenue and had grown from $6 million in the second quarter of 2020 to $555 million in the second quarter of 2026. It also reported record crypto trading-volume market share of 10.3% and said 88% of net revenue came from sources other than bitcoin spot trading.

Costs are the other controllable variable. The source article said Coinbase posted GAAP operating losses in both the first and second quarters and cut about 700 jobs in May. Management guided third-quarter adjusted expenses to $980 million to $1.08 billion and full-year adjusted expenses to $4.2 billion to $4.45 billion.

The report therefore has three clean tests: revenue near the pace required by the annual consensus, subscription and services within the $500 million to $580 million range, and adjusted expenses that show the restructuring is producing durable savings. AI agents and tokenized stocks may become meaningful businesses, but this quarter still belongs to trading activity, stablecoin economics and cost discipline.
