Cramer Calls Akamai ‘Terrific,’ but the Better Case Comes From Cloud and Security Growth

Jim Cramer praised Akamai while sounding more cautious on housing-exposed and capital-intensive names. Akamai’s recent results provide a stronger foundation for the bullish case, with cloud infrastructure and security growing faster than the overall business.
Jim Cramer’s Lightning Round comments put Akamai Technologies, Builders FirstSource, Home Depot and Applied Digital into the same segment, but the companies require very different investment frameworks. The most constructive comment was reserved for Akamai.
Cramer called Akamai “terrific,” and the company’s recent financial results provide some support for that view. Akamai reported second-quarter revenue of about $1.1 billion, up 5% year over year, while non-GAAP EPS of $1.59 exceeded the analyst estimate cited in the supplied source.
The more important operating story is mix. Akamai’s cloud-infrastructure revenue increased 39% year over year and security revenue grew 10%. That shift helps move the company away from being viewed primarily as a legacy content-delivery network and toward a broader cloud and cybersecurity platform.
Akamai also disclosed a more than $600 million, four-year cloud-infrastructure commitment from a U.S. technology company tied to robotics development. Large multi-year commitments can improve visibility, although investors still need to see how contract economics translate into margins and free cash flow.
Cramer was much less enthusiastic about Builders FirstSource, pointing instead to pressure on Home Depot. That is effectively a housing-cycle call. Both businesses are exposed to renovation, construction and home-improvement demand, making higher rates and weak housing turnover relevant even if company-specific execution differs.
Applied Digital received a different kind of caution. Cramer said he was focused on companies that are already making money. The supplied source notes that Applied Digital had recently reported a large revenue beat and positive adjusted earnings, but the business remains capital intensive and tied closely to data-center expansion.
The segment is therefore more useful when translated into categories rather than celebrity stock picks. Akamai is an execution and business-mix story. Home Depot and Builders FirstSource are housing-cycle stories. Applied Digital is an infrastructure-growth story with financing and capital-intensity risk.
Investors should treat television opinions as starting points for research, not as valuation work. The strongest part of the Akamai case comes from its actual cloud and security growth, not from the adjective used on television.
BTI’s bottom line: Cramer’s bullish Akamai view has fundamental support in cloud and security growth, while his caution on housing-exposed names reflects a tougher macro backdrop. The right conclusion is to compare business economics, not simply rank the stocks by the tone of a Lightning Round answer.
