ABUS Stock Surges 10% Today — What’s Driving This Super Rally?

Arbutus Biopharma shares jumped more than 10% in pre-market trading after the company announced a cash-funded repurchase, while patent litigation involving Pfizer and BioNTech and stronger-than-expected quarterly revenue added to investor interest.
Arbutus Biopharma Corporation (ABUS) shares surged more than 10% in pre-market trading on Friday, Aug. 21, 2026, after the company announced plans to repurchase up to $230 million of its common shares. The company will offer between $5 and $5.75 per share, in cash, less applicable withholding taxes and without interest. Arbutus said it will fund the repurchase with cash on hand. The offer is expected to begin on or about Aug. 24 and expire on or about Sept. 29. The maximum repurchase amount is substantial relative to Arbutus’ reported liquidity. At the end of the second quarter, the company held $92.6 million in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities. The source provided no further details on how the company would fund the difference between that balance and the proposed maximum. If the pre-market gain holds, ABUS could return to its July highs. The stock has risen nearly 33% over the last year. Arbutus reported second-quarter revenue of $1.01 million, exceeding Fiscal.ai’s $0.68 million estimate. The company posted a loss of $0.03 per share, compared with an estimated loss of $0.02. Intellectual-property enforcement is another potential catalyst. Last month, Arbutus and its exclusive licensee, Genevant Sciences GmbH, a subsidiary of Roivant Sciences (ROIV), filed three international lawsuits seeking to enforce patents covering their lipid nanoparticle technology against Pfizer Inc., BioNTech SE and certain affiliates. “We, alongside our exclusive licensee Genevant, will continue to vigorously enforce our rights against infringers, including Pfizer and BioNTech,” CEO Lindsay Androski said. She also called Arbutus’ March 2026 settlement with Moderna and the initial payment received in July 2026 critical milestones for its lipid nanoparticle technology and nucleic-acid treatments. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment remained “extremely bullish” amid high message volume. Users expected ABUS to reach at least $6.50, versus pre-market trading near $5.30. Investors must balance the repurchase and legal catalysts against the company’s limited revenue, quarterly loss and litigation uncertainty.
